FAQ: The Ollie Chair: Shape-Shifting Seating

How much weight can the Ollie Chair support?

The Ollie chair is BIFMA-certified, which means it has been tested to meet a set of furniture-specific safety and performance standards. As part of that testing, the chair needs to withstand a drop of a 300 lb (136 kg) sandbag from 6 inches (152 mm) above the seat; that 6 inch (152 mm) drop is a very close simulation of a real person actually sitting down. So in terms of applied direct weight, we can confirm the chair is (and feels) sturdy up to 300 lbs (136 kg).

We also completed some additional "real subject" testing (as opposed to "in-facility" testing) where we put in excess of 370 lbs on the chair without issue -- note that we're not actually certified up to that weight and would advise against using the chair at or above the parameters certified in the BIFMA testing, but it can be helpful to understand how the chair base responds when it is overstressed. See a video of the results on our main campaign page or follow this link: http://bit.ly/OllieWeightTest.

How much does the Ollie Chair weigh?

The chair weighs between 14 lbs (6.4 kg) and 16 lbs (7.25 kg) depending on the tambour....the teak tambour is at the upper limit of this range but something like the maple tambour (with the "vandal gummy bear" silk screens) is at the lower end.

Is it possible for the chair to close when a person is seated and tips the chair back on its rear legs?

When a person is seated on the chair, her weight is actually helping to keep the chair extended by applying pressure to the side hinges on the chair base. There are clips attached to each side of the tambour (3 per side) that catch the chair base when it unfurls so that it cannot overextend. Therefore, if you are seated, the chair will not close unexpectedly and in fact is significantly more difficult to close because of the opposing pressure from your body weight.

When do I pick the color of my chair base or custom tambour?

We'll send out a survey when the campaign ends so that backers can specify the chair base colors and any custom tambours.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the project is locked down for shipping. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.

Why can’t I log into my account?

Request a login link to your survey by entering your email here:
https://the-ollie-chair.backerkit.com/

BackerKit will send you an automated email with an invite link to whatever email you pledged with.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

When will my pledge will be shipped, charged or locked down?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

Can I upgrade or get multiple copies of my pledge?

This depends on the project creator’s decision. If you are unable to see the ‘Want to switch your pledge level?’ after clicking on your pledge amount under “Pledge Level” in your survey, then the project creator would prefer people not to switch pledge levels.
