The Ollie Chair: Shape-Shifting Seating

Created by RockPaperRobot

The Ollie Chair unfurls with a flourish and retracts instantly with the pull of a string. Handsome and customizable, it’s a versatile primary or secondary seat for homes and businesses, inside and outdoors. The chair's slatted wood seat, called a tambour, allows it to fluidly transform between ergonomic and flat profiles; its aluminum body provides a robust, retractable structure with a sleek look. Out on the balcony, down at the corner coffeeshop, around the co-working table, in a cozy kitchenette, court side, poolside, or stored side-by-side on the wall, the Ollie Chair adds functional flair to any space.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

It's happening....

Happy Autumn, Ollie Chair Backers!

We just got back from a(nother) round of doing Quality Control with the manufacturer. (See below my vain attempt at organizational signage (they will be real posters soon!). Lesson: we need to write them in French and English.)

Apparently I have to translate my signs into French.
Apparently I have to translate my signs into French.

It's a grueling process because we are literally setting up the plant for high volume production from scratch.

This means buying HUGE machines. The hinge forming itself is a two-machine process:

Hinge Forming Machine 1

Hinge Forming Machine 2

Practice makes perfect....after a lot of imperfection.

Ugh. I wish I made red bouncy balls.

We even had to procure a new welder (which meant changes to the building's electrical!)

Welding. He has the patience of a saint.

As I think I mentioned, one of our greatest challenges has been getting the tambours right  - but I think we finally nailed it! The teak is beautiful and because (as with all wood) there is a lot of variation, each chair is totally unique! Note, upon receipt, the tambours may be slightly lighter than in initial images, but the wood actually darkens when exposed to light. We saw it change over the course of the day....so your tambours will darken more after they are unpacked. In the picture below, the tambour closest to the viewer is the standard teak that hadn't had time to darken yet, followed by a custom grey wash, custom felt, etc...)

And here is the news I wanted to share, hidden unstrategically and randomly in the body of the message. Kind of like earth in the solar system. It's just where it is but it's special and full of life.

*************************  WE STARTED SHIPPING!!!! *************************

We are going to ship out on a rolling schedule throughout the next month so you should receive your products pretty much exactly according to the timeline we estimated on the campaign (or slightly earlier)!!!  All of you will be entered into our new e-commerce site so when we ship, you'll get a notification and be able to track your Ollies. It will be riveting.

If you ordered additional custom tambours, they will come separately by the end of October as well.

Okay, please let us know if you have any questions. We're here for ya (though we are sooooo busy so we just require a little latitude on our response time....)

Happy Fall. Get glad you'll have extra seating for Thanksgiving!

The many shades of Ollie

Hi Everyone,

Well, we are definitely in the last stretches of manufacturing and our last samples were pretty close to perfect.

We will be going to the manufacturer to do quality control on a first small batch next week. Providing all goes well, Brooklyn backers may be getting their chairs by end of Sept. During that time we will be churning out the rest and are currently on schedule to ship early October to meet our late Oct/early Nov Kickstarter estimated delivery date.

One thing though - we did recently realize that the matte black chairs get very "finger printy."  We have decided to go with gloss black instead of matte black. It is really not that big of a difference, but if anyone getting matte black has any issues with the change, please let us know asap so we can switch you to the matte white or matte silver.  See below for a pic and a hilarious caption. Please write [email protected] by Tues, Sept 5 if this is an issue for you. Honestly though, you're gonna love the gloss black. It's super sexy.

Finally, if you feel the need to double check your shipping info and make any changes, now is the time to do it so that everything is set in case we end up shipping earlier than expected. Just update it on your Backerkit by Sept 5th. NOTE: If you haven't moved, or have already told us of the change, you can totally ignore this. Really. Stop reading this paragraph.

Attaching a few more cool pix for you of some colored samples we got from the manufacturer in case we ever want to offer them in the future. I think we are going to send the gold one to Lady Gaga (one of our other Kickstarter tiers). I am trying to figure out how to put those antique bathtub claw feet on it. It's a very bad idea but I can't seem to shake it.

Oh! I am going to add a pic of the new boxes too! Funny how such inconsequence can feel legitimizing...

Miss you guys,

RPR and the Get Ollie Crew

Locking down BackerKit Surveys in an hour….
almost 7 years ago – Mon, May 15, 2017 at 09:57:26 PM

Hey Everyone,

Quick reminder (to the 5 of you who have not completed surveys) that we will be locking down your Ollie Chair preferences on BackerKit in about an hour (5:00 PM EST). This is your last chance to tell us your chair base color or additional tambour preferences.

NOTE: After we lock down survey responses, you WILL be able to update your shipping address until we ship. We'll give you plenty of notice before that time.

If you have a chair emergency or want to add to your order after we have locked the surveys down, please email us at [email protected]

Thanks again for all of your support! We have some exciting announcements in the coming weeks, so stay tuned...

Seat You Soon,

The Ollie Team

Just under 2 weeks to go to finalize your surveys!
almost 7 years ago – Thu, May 04, 2017 at 05:39:16 PM

Hi Backers,

Thank (most of) you so much for filling out your Backerkit surveys with such alacrity and grace.

If you haven't done so yet, please make sure to do so or to let us know if you need some help: as of today, you have 11 more days to choose or change your preferences for your Ollie Chair bases and any additional tambours.

We will be back in your inbox next week with one last reminder to fill in your surveys as well as some (seriously) exciting updates about the production process.
