The Ollie Chair: Shape-Shifting Seating

Created by RockPaperRobot

The Ollie Chair unfurls with a flourish and retracts instantly with the pull of a string. Handsome and customizable, it’s a versatile primary or secondary seat for homes and businesses, inside and outdoors. The chair's slatted wood seat, called a tambour, allows it to fluidly transform between ergonomic and flat profiles; its aluminum body provides a robust, retractable structure with a sleek look. Out on the balcony, down at the corner coffeeshop, around the co-working table, in a cozy kitchenette, court side, poolside, or stored side-by-side on the wall, the Ollie Chair adds functional flair to any space.

Project Update #3: Come Take a Seat with Us!
about 7 years ago – Mon, Mar 13, 2017 at 03:39:24 PM

We just got our latest set of sample chairs!

Pete's Happy Face!
Pete's Happy Face!

They look amazing, which is a really good thing considering we’re about to demo them with all of you this week! Please join us at the two events below if you can:

  • Kickstarter Live Webcast on Thursday 3/9 at 12:00pm EST (5:00pm GMT). Join from our Kickstarter campaign page or from our Kickstarter Live direct link. We’ll give you a tour of our workshop, discuss tambour customizations, demonstrate how to swap a tambour, and answer any questions (and yes, we actually like hard questions).
  • RockPaperRobot Open House on Friday 3/10 at 5pm EST. Come see the Ollie Chair and the RPR team in their native environment. See here for directions to our studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard (Brooklyn, NY, USA). Please shoot us a quick note at [email protected] if you plan to attend!

We’re also in the final stages of ironing out our stretch goals -- to be unveiled tomorrow! Stay tuned as we update our Kickstarter campaign page and provide you with additional bulleted lists :).

And finally, be sure to check out our FAQ on the Kickstarter campaign page as well as our new website at www.rockpaperrobot.com. Feedback on either is most welcome!

Thanks to all again for supporting the Ollie Chair campaign. We’re so excited to meet you over the interwebs on Thursday and in person on Friday.

Project Update #4: Time to Stretch!
about 7 years ago – Sat, Mar 11, 2017 at 07:41:40 AM

And nowwww ... it’s La La Land! Oops, sorry, we meant...it’s Stretch Goals! We’re thrilled to roll these out and hope you’re also excited for these big milestones ahead.

$200,000 -- Custom distressed paint tambours in more colors! If you like the look but not the blue color of the additional distressed paint tambour option, this stretch goal is your answer. We can even do solid colors without the distressed look. This is serious customization! Note that you’ll have to pledge at a tier with “+ Add’l Custom Seats” to take advantage. We’ll post some swatches in the coming days, and you’ll be able to select your preference on the backer survey at the end of the campaign (but feel free to shout out #colorsincomments).

$250,000 -- Custom felt tambours in more colors! Much like the expansion of color options for the distressed paint tambour, this goal will add color options to the custom felt tambours as well. Note that you’ll have to pledge at a tier with “+ Add’l Custom Seats” to take advantage. We’ll post some swatches in the coming days, and you’ll be able to select your preference on the backer survey at the end of the campaign.

$300,000 -- Wall mounting hardware for everyone! Everyone’s Ollie Chairs will automatically come with a set of specialized hooks to put your new “functional art” instincts into practice. This is the big one -- Ollie looks great when hung on the wall, and these hooks are designed not only to properly hold Ollie’s weight but also to look great when you remove Ollie from the wall to use as a seat.

$400,000 -- Additional chair base color! If you’re looking for a pop of color in a world of black, white, and silver chair bases, let's get here. We will informally poll all backers via the campaign page comments on a 4th color preference when we hit this stretch goal, so you will all know what the options are before the campaign ends (psst, red and blue are cool).

$500,000 -- Ollie carrying tote for everyone! A design is in the works for a carrying tote for Ollie so you can easily take Ollie with you when you’re on the go. The exact style is still TBD...we’re testing a few different engineering solutions now, but we’ll BRB with more info.

Don’t forget to #sharethechair to make these goals a reality!

Project Update #2: Welcome to Olliewood!
about 7 years ago – Fri, Mar 10, 2017 at 11:55:14 AM

We did it!

Thanks to all of you, our extended family of team members and enthusiasts, Ollie achieved (aka blew past) its fundraising goal in less than 3 days. We are so excited and humbled by the support!

And this timing couldn’t be more perfect because our offsite to the Bahamas starts tomorrow. Just kidding! We have a ton of stuff planned for the next couple weeks to keep momentum strong, spirits soaring, and everyone engaged and informed. Get ready for a bunch of bulleted lists and chair puns (Jess can’t stop herself).

  • #ChairpeopleOfTheWeek: As of this morning we are closing in on 150% funded. Population Olliewood is 250 backers and growing by the hour.
  • #Props: We were featured in Kickstarter’s Projects We Love newsletter. The response to this was insane, including ours.
  • #OllieWorldWide: We got feedback from early backers that our international shipping costs felt high, so we scrambled all week to reduce the numbers. Basically, we're eating a bunch of it and routing some shipments through strange places, but ultimately, Ollie is going international for less. Thanks to those of you who participated in our crazy scheme to get this right.
  • #GoLong: We are going to be adding stretch goals by early next week, but would like to get suggestions from you as to what would be most popular. Start to add those in the comments! And, no, you can't all have puppies.
  • #UpClose: We’ll be doing a Live Stream next week Thursday Mar-09 12:00PM EST (5:00PM GMT) during which we will answer questions and give a demo of some of Ollie's features. We will figure out exactly what we mean by this (grin) and let you know how to tune in well in advance.
  • #FridayTryday: For our neighbors, we'll be having open house at our office next Friday Mar-10 at 5:00PM EST so people can try the chairs and check out the tambours. We might even have cookies....because we always have cookies.

Okay, folks, the party's just getting started. Hold onto your seats!

Project Update #1: The Ollie Chair: Shape-Shifting Seating
about 7 years ago – Thu, Mar 02, 2017 at 11:20:23 PM

Hello! (We waffled for an hour on our opener and netted out here. We kid you not).

Thank you all (backers and Kickstarter) for your early support of the Ollie Chair and the RockPaperRobot (RPR from here on out) team! We are simultaneously humbled, excited, and exhausted - it's an interesting combo of self-reflection, joy, and....snacking.

We'll be brief tonight to conserve our energy for tomorrow's push. Here's the current situation:

  • 50% funded on Day 1. Bam!!! This is a great sign for the success of our campaign.
  • 93 backers. This is a great sign for the success of our species (smart, discerning humans you are).
  • Listed in "Projects We Love" by Kickstarter. It's mutual, KS!

In our "short blurb" for this project, we describe Ollie as "the superhero of chairs." But to Ollie and RPR, you 93 backers are the superheroes. It feels vulnerable to try to bring a product into the world, but it's euphoric when others see something special in the design and stand up (ermm...sit down) in support of it.

We look forward to getting to know each other throughout the next month.

And since we're a team now, don't forget to #sharethechair.

Thankfully yours,

RPR
